Staying Connected
Through Every Sense
Sensory impairment refers to any condition that adversely affects one of the five senses. Impairment of the senses affects everyone differently. This can include difficulties with hearing or vision, as well as more severe impairments. Some of the types of sensory impairment include:
Vision Impairment: This involves loss of vision to the point where an individual has difficulty identifying objects or people. These people often find it hard to navigate their environment and require supportive devices such as walking canes or guide dogs. As such, they may require assistance with getting around as well as with general tasks such as cooking and cleaning.
Hearing Impairment: This can range from only being able to hear loud voices or noises to being completely unable to hear at all. Depending on hearing loss severity, the individual may still be able to speak or communicate with sign language. In such cases, the individual may need someone to help them communicate with others.
Dual Sensory Loss: Some individuals may suffer both hearing loss and vision loss. In such cases, their ability to communicate or carry out daily 13 activities will be greatly impacted. As such, these individuals will need special care to ensure their needs are met.
Sensory Processing Disorder: Some individuals may have difficulty processing sensory information. This can either make them feel overwhelmed and anxious or unable to react appropriately. This can include poor coordination, reduced sensation when touching objects, and feeling irritated by certain sounds or lights. In such cases, an individual might need assistance to help them cope with various daily tasks.
Depending on the severity, some people may develop additional problems, such as reduced mobility or trouble communicating. Should this occur, they will need assistance with their day-to-day needs.
